FAQ

Big Picture

What's your target state for this venture?

Larger goal with this venture is to help with environment conservation. To do this, we believe, sustainability has to become a key aspect of our agriculture.

The farming model that we are attempting is based on our traditional knowledge of mimicking nature; increasing soil fertility by using natural ingredients, trying to maintain a natural food chain at the farm and using few modern techniques like crop rotation to help improve the yield. This approach, instead of putting us right at the center, attempts to treat all organisms with importance.

In next five years we plan to plant and nurture 10,000 trees that acts as an habitat for various birds, bees and animals. We also will strive to be net water neutral over long term; we will take measures to refill our underground water resources

Farming when done holistically will help alleviate the stress on the environment and to scale this kind of farming we intend to develop a successful business model based on farm-to-table natural, sustainable farming.

What does sustainable, natural farming entail? How is it different than more widespread chemical farming?

Only when farming happens naturally, it will remain sustainable over longer term. This kind of farming has three major aspects:

  1. Treating the farm as an ecosystem and not just like a food production factory

This philosophy encourages planting of trees and hedges that act as habitats to different kinds of birds, planting flowers to encourage pollinators like butterflies and bees, rearing animals like cows to provide with natural soil conditioners like manure, and many other techniques that are common in our forests.

A closed loop system and a thriving chain-links within the system creates a natural and in turn sustainable farming system

  1. Ensuring longer term soil fertility by feeding natural ingredients to the microorganisms in the soil

The soil is filled with billions of microorganisms and they are in a symbiotic relationship with trees and plants above the soil. Plants help their underground friends with sugars and in return these microorganisms bring nutrients to the plant roots.

This relationship was quite well known in the past when farmers used natural compost, farm yard manure to increase soil fertility. However, with the advent of chemical fertilizers we became lazy and started taking the short cut of directly providing our plants with nutrients which we think they need. This approach while, provided results for a few years, has resulted in loss of soil fertility in many places.

By going back to our previous techniques, we intend to restore those natural practices that keeps the soil ecosystem thriving and also helps us in getting healthy, strong plants.

  1. Taking care of underground water resources and taking measures to constantly refill them

Most important component for farming is water and understandably agriculture is the biggest consumer of underground water by far across the world. Underground water takes years, if not decades to recharge. Unregulated use of water in conjunction with climate change has already begun to cause water shortages and adversely affect communities worldwide.

In our farming method we try our best to

– reduce the water use by using irrigation systems like drip

– recharge the underground water by digging ditches for water

We aim to be at net neutral with our water usage over long term.

Farming Practices

Do you use any chemicals - synthetic fertilizers or pesticides?

No, we do not use any synthetic, toxic chemicals at our farm.

How do you provide nutrients to your plants without chemical fertilizers?

We add natural ingredients like cow manure, farm waste, poultry waste, wood shavings, etc. to feed the soil which in turn feeds our plants.

This also ensures that our soil remains fertile over long term.

How do you protect your produce without chemical pesticides?

Our plant protection measures fall into three buckets:

  1. Strength-building: By ensuring that plants have nutrients that they need when they need it results in healthy plants with strong immune system thus less susceptible to pests
  2. Nature Smart: We are trying to create natural food chain so as to always have a natural predator for pests attacking our plants. We also employ crop rotation so as to not strengthen any underground viruses. We use companion planting/inter-cropping to create win-win partnerships among different plants
  3. Precautionary: We create structures for vines so as to avoid soil infections and maintain better air flow
  4. Reactionary: If severely infected we use natural sprays like neem, clove oil, cow urine, etc. to treat our crops. In extreme cases, we also use certified organic sprays with beneficial enzymes

We also recognize that in a natural system, a portion of our crops will be lost to natural food chain and we plan our production accounting for such losses.

Offerings & Delivery

Do you provide all vegetables and fruits all the time?

We work under nature’s guidance and provide seasonal vegetables and a few seasonal fruits.

While we provide over 50 varieties of vegetables in peak season  of winter (November – March), we provide around 25-35 varieties of vegetables in remaining months.

In terms of fruits, we provide water and musk melon now. We will soon offer banana and papaya.

Apart from fruits and vegetables, what else do you provide?

From time-to-time, we will have other farm items like cereals, grains and pulses. We also will have some natural honey.

Apart from these, we also have plans to produce dried or vacuum fried vegetable chips, dairy products and ready-to-eat meals.

Do you also provide grains, pulses and cereals?

While we won’t have this all the time, we do grow limited quantity of grains, cereals and pulses.

We will update online as we have them in stock

Can you start delivering where we live?

We deliver in Thane and Mulund area right now and to maintain feasibility of home delivery, we are focused on adding more societies to our delivery route.

If we don’t already deliver to your complex, please reach out to us and we can figure out ways of adding your complex to our delivery system

Why are your prices high compared to the market?

Our prices reflect following:

  • We do lose ~25% produce to attacks and in sorting stage

  • We bring the produce directly from our farm to your home mostly within 36 hours of harvest ensuring freshness and highest quality

  • Our team is composed of former consultants and industrialists who maintain the high quality of your food and constantly execute the systems to keep this machine going

  • We also invest significantly in measures like water refilling and tree planting

Considering the above, we believe we are priced quite reasonably. Also, where else can you say that you know the farmer as well as the farm where your veggies come from
